Leadership: the art and the science

a day for experienced professionals

If your work is about managing people, whether that is in an HR capacity, in an organisational role or as an individual coach, you will always be driven to understand human nature better. This workshop offers an opportunity to be updated on the very latest knowledge of how and why human beings function the way they do. It is an informative and practical day which will sharpen you up and bring your effectiveness onto another level. Even very skilled and experienced professionals sometimes rely too much on (sometimes outdated) techniques alone, without having a well rooted and coherent framework from which to work.

You will gain from this day an overview of the leading-edge organising principles of human psychology* as they stand today. You will understand why certain approaches work in getting the best out of people; how you can facilitate people towards getting their real needs met and employing their resources fully. Your efforts will become more efficient in outcome and time, as well as more long-lasting by harnessing people's talents rather than relying on mechanical methodology.

The framework:

The principles of the Human Givens approach

Among the important ideas:

  • the link between emotion and behaviour, via pattern matching
  • the importance and application of the relaxation response
  • the basic skills of brief and solution focussed coaching, which will make a great impact immediately
  • the link between anxiety and depression
  • an understanding of how stress and depression develop and how to prevent the onset of the cycle
  • verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • an immediate recognition of determining factors for successful interpersonal exchange (e.g. coaching, business meetings and cooperation )
(*) These ideas have been synthesised and described by Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell in Human Givens, a new approach to emotional health and clear thinking, HG Publishing
